Overview BIOTROP, the Southeast Asian Regional Centre for Tropical Biology, is one of the twelve (12) centres under the SEAMEO (Southeast Asian Minister of Education Organization). It is based in Bogor, Indonesia where it was established 25 years ago, in 1968. Originally located in the famed botanical garden, it has moved in 1978 to its present site, 6 kms away from the proper where it occupies four hectares of land, belonging to Bogor Agricultural University, with plenty for space expansion. BIOTROP gets financial assistance for its capital and operational funds from the Government of Indonesia. Special funds for the implementation of its programme of activities come from the SEAMEO Secretariat (SEAMES) through the contribution of member countries and donations of associate member countries. Special projects are financed by funding agencies, international, national and local. The policy-making body of BIOTROP is the Governing Board consisting of nine members, one from each of the member countries. Implementation of the policies is the responsibility of the Director and two deputies, one for programme and marketing and one for Resource Management and Communication. All three are each appointed for a period of three years by the Governing Board. All activities are prepared on the basis of a five-year development plan. The 5th five-year Development Plan begins FY 1993/1994. As in the past, the plan has been extensively discussed through a series of consultation, first with scientist and agencies, including universities and research institutions at the local and national levels, followed by consultation at regional level. Endorsed by the different countries High Officials, the Council of Ministers (SEAMEC) gave its approval during its meeting in February 1993. |
